This course focuses on the increasingly punitive attitude toward women of color and how it has dramatically affected the legal systems with which poor women interact most: welfare, criminal justice, and family courts. In each of these areas poor women are stigmatized; their behavior is viewed with suspicion and hostility; and state efforts to control their sexual and maternal behavioral become even harsher.
